For Wrinkles

The For Wrinkles site intend to give the reasons for wrinkles to appear and presents an overview of the various treatments that exist today to reduce wrinkles.

Background to wrinkles

Wrinkles is something we all encounter, sooner or later. But what is the underlying cause for getting wrinkles?

Beneath the uppermost skin layer are connective tissue with different functions. Collagen and elastin are the most important proteins for the skin and when we grow old the production decreases, which leads to wrinkles.

Collagen gives the skin its strength, proteins called glycosaminoglycans give the skin its turgor, and elastin fibers give the skin its elasticity or spring.

Starting at the age of 25 the skin loses some of its ability to produce these two proteins. Every year thereafter the body loses about 1.5% of collagen, and the elastin fibers starts to wear out. The skin becomes less pliable and less elastic. This leads to formation of wrinkles and lines around the eyes and mouth. Also signs of sagging starts to appear, often under the chin.

When we reach mid-adult life, 30% or more of our collagen mass is gone. And the signs of wrinkles and sagging becomes more and more noticeable.
